The exclusive Blue Flag awards given to beaches and marinas that meet strict criteria for both water quality and environmental management have been handed out in Croatia, and this year's convincing winner is the Istrian town of Porec.
Porec, which received its first blue flag 13 years ago, received 21 blue flags this year to give it a resounding victory.
"I must point out that people in Porec who live and make their livelihoods from tourism clearly understand the importance of ecology, and that quality service is not at the expense of natural resources. Today we call it sustainable development, one that does not disturb the natural balance, "said Porec Tourism Board director Nenad Velenik.
Blue Flag criteria include standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management criteria. The Blue Flag is sought for beaches and marinas as an indication of their high environmental and quality standards. Blue Flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
