Business: 18 April 2006, Tuesday.
Croatia has emerged to be a surprise hit, gaining the most mentions for both excitement and value for money in a recent survey of the top tour operators in Europe.
The Adriatic country was followed by the Czech Republic (15%) and Iceland (13%) in the ranking of most exciting place for tourists.
Croatia has come out on top because it is perceived as European without suffering the pitfalls of EU membership, according to Tom Jenkins, Executive Director of ETOA. He explained that as not being subject to EU VAT laws, Croatia enjoys a 19% price break compared with it close competitors - Greece and Italy.
When it comes to romance, Paris is the runaway winner and France also wins with the product of family entertainment, as Euro Disney is rated the top destination for families with children.
Italy is by far the best for art lovers and London is rated best for sightseeing, shopping and partying yet the UK is considered to be worst value.
As best tourist attractions were favored the Eiffel Tower (50%) followed by the London Eye (29%) and the Coliseum (21%).
The survey was conducted by the European Tour Operators Association at its Hoteliers Marketplace, an annual event, attended by most of the leading inbound European tour operators.
