From other comments on the web I'd thought this was another Lumbarda development. I hadn't realised it was Prizba! I quite agree with you. Prizba is a quiet place. We've family and friends there. The delights of there and Blato are hardly likely to excite 5 star tourists. I gather even the existing hotel didn't open this summer.

Peter, the fastest passenger carrying vessels on the Adriatic are the Venezia Lines hover cats and they can only just make 50 knots empty under perfect conditions. The average for a high speed craft is a max of 25 - 35 knots depending on construction and propulsion. The Stena HSS's average 35 knots with gas turbines (jet engines) but most hydrofoils are considerably slower, they just have the advantage of short start and stopping distances, but are less seaworthy. 45 mins by sea from Korcula town maybe, but no way from Cavtat or DBV. Make you doubt other promises By the way Brno which is not far away is also difficult for us to sell for holidays due to its location. The hotel rates there are some of the lowest we have come across in recent years and this is due mainly to its location so far from Korcula town.

to confirm After much searching it seems the average speed of these hydrofoils is approx 35-40kts (two hours transport time ex Dubrovnik). The hotel at Prizba did open this summer - about 10 days ago to be exact! I went in and chatted to the staff there. they seemd very aware of the building that was to commence for the Marina Marco in Sept. Lots and lots of questions to be answered... could be a great investment if all goes to plan but it seems to be hanging from very thin threads!! I've recently heard also there may be problems building a marina the size of the one they're advertising. This however is unconfirmed and i'm awaiting further information.

Hi Mick
You are more up to date than I am on it then. I last heard from relatives living just along from it about a month ago and they'd thought it was not opening. The season seems to be bad all over the place this year, with the footie and Olympics getting the blame. People in Istria say they had a better season during the war, when Croatians were coming over to get away from it.
Do you get to Prizba often?
Cheers

I have a house in Prizba, which is very close to where this development is planned. I cycle past the site most days when we are on the island. I was last there nearly three weeks ago. As yet there is nothing happening on the site, although I did spot a chap looking like a surveyor taking measuements a few weeks back. I would have thought that the develpoers would be doing extremely well to get to a shell construction complete stage by February next year.
As to accessability. It is true to say that the island is not the easiest to get to, although the BA flights to Dubrovnik have certainly made life a lot easier this summer. In a sense difficulty of access is a plus as the island does not crawl with tourists. I agree that the development would have to be self sufficient for entertainment, restaurants etc (at least out of season) as there is very little open except in the towns apart from during the June to end August period.
I will watch the space (in the coastline!) with interest during my next visits and report back any worthwhile news.

Having been to Korcula just a couple of weeks ago (and having fallen for it, and Mljet, in a big way!) I have to say that I'm not thrilled to think of developments like this one cropping up all over the place... Are there any restrictions to how much development can go ahead? Thanks Maggie

The only restrictions are the minds and greed of the developers who may not even be Croatian even if the 'front' company is. But hey, what do I know I am just cynical after seening some peoples ideas of golf courses and airports etc.

The development in Prizba is actually being organised by a man from Blato who has lived in Australia for the last 30-40 years (although he goes there every here for the summer). Although the development may have some economic benefits? for the locals, especially the balcani. . I am Australian with parents from Blato and I try to go there as much as possible - it is picturesque! I will simply hate the next time I go there and see that end of Korcula (From Brna to Karbuni) be destroyed by such a development. Progress I guess

It's always going to be that conflict of interests isn't it - it's good for the locals to have new developments and increased tourism, but at the same time discerning travellers, and the locals too, face the beauty of the landscape being compromised and the tone of life changed...
Having spent time in Italy and on Malta where building laws are lax and uninforced I worry that the same horrors will occur on the Croatian sea front as have happened there... Perhaps the worst thing is properties left unfinished.

Noel has just pointed out to me that the development is no longer on the Croatian Sun website and I cannot find it there either. Does anyone know more?
One thing I did notice there was a new development in Medulin that someone told me last week had been cancelled. As it was one of the few larger developments in Istria I wondered why.

I gather the project has collapsed. Although there was a claim that the entire first phase had been sold out in 24 hours, it now seems that only 42 had been sold and that the planning process had never been completed. It seems strange that so much publicity should have been whipped up and money taken off people if the project had not even had planning permission. It certainly points up the dangers of dealing with companies taking money for offplan developments before work has even commenced. It must be a considerable embarassment to Savills.

MARCO MARINA STATUS
According to one of the estate agents previously marketing this proposed development, Marco Marina on Korcula is STILL awaiting planning approval. This has been the case since phase 1 was released in June last year. In October 2004 the estate agents marketing this gave individuals with reservation deposits on phase 1 the option to pull out as the agents informed the investors there is going to be a delay with planning approval. Whether this was new news at that time to the agents or this was a strategy that they planning before phase 1 release is unknown. Now it is 1 year into this wait for alledge planning approval.
I have been told by the estate agents that plans we submitted to the planning ministry and pass back to the developer for adjustment. I have been vaguely given the impression this 2 submission is under review now. Unfortunately getting definates on this black box process is near impossible, except to here "still in progress". I do not know if this means "still in progress and about to fail" or "still in progress and about to pass".
Additionally Crowne Plaza is awaiting payment by the developer Adriatic Development Corporation.
Anyone with further facts on where in the process this proposed development is ?
Best regards, Mike
