When I bought my house two years ago I realised that I needed a car over there. I asked my lawyer what the legal implications were and he telephoned the police on my behalf and was told that as a non-national I was not able to own a car. I then found a really cheap lhd Opel here in UK and drove it over. Of course, now I have to bring it back each year for its MOT! Now I have just been told that there are such things as 'green' registration plates for foreign owners of Croation registered vehicles. Does anyone have any more information about this???

I don't know if the information in this thread is still valid - maybe it's changed since 2005 /6 - does anyone know? I have read somewhere that if you have a residency permit you can own and register a car in Croatia. Can anyone verify that?

The recent experience of some American clients who are residents here suggests that it is still a problem. They have bought themselves a car but have registered it in the name of Croatian friends after seeking legal advice.
Others from less far afield are using vehicles still registered in their countries of origin and driving them back for testing once a year. As they are mostly over seven years old they would be ineligible for registration here, even if the permission to own a car here changed.
EU citizens may find that they are able to own a vehicle and register it here once we are in the EU, as it would seem to be a basic rights issue, Croatians being able to own vehicles in other EU countries.

Thanks Peter. As you say the situation with regard to EU citizens should change once Croatia becomes an EU member.
As a associated question: What is the situation with regard to car insurance?

Hi Bruce
Sorry to be slow. Busy weekend. I'm checking it with my broker.
One British friend who is here most of the year and has a UK registered vehicle insures it in the UK with Saga. They were the only company he found that were happy with the vehicle being out of the UK most of the time. Everyone else limited out of UK use to just a month or so at a time. It does mean that he still needs to return to the UK for an MOT each year, but he combines that with doing other stuff while he is over.
My broker has just got back to me to tell me that yes, he can do insurance for a foreign registered vehicle normally kept here, but the cover is limited to Croatia and precludes use of the car for nipping over to adjacent countries. Up in Istria, when my nearest Chinese takeaway is over the border, this would be a bind, but down in Dalmatia maybe less so. (I would never have believed I could buy takeaway food in another country that was still warm when I got it home !)
