Getting Around Croatia: The Latest Options
Sometimes figuring out how to get from one place to another is the most daunting part of the holiday-planning process. Croatia is no exception. Plane? Train? Car? Bus? Ferry? Seaplane? Let's examine each choice:
Plane: This is hands-down the best choice for a Zagreb-Dubrovnik trajectory. Trains don't exist; it's a long journey by bus or car. A flight may also be the best choice for an Istria-Dubrovnik route as long as you don't mind a change in Zagreb. See more on getting to Dubrovnik.
Bus: If you care about your carbon footprint, buses are definitely the way to go. Connections between all towns in continental Croatia are excellent. On the islands? Not so much. To truly explore an island, you'll need wheels. But wherever you are, you'll find the buses comfortable and efficient. See more on getting around Croatia by bus.
Car: For flexibility, it's hard to beat a car. Just bear in mind that central Split and Dubrovnik are completely closed to cars and that taking a car aboard a ferry to the islands at the height of the summer season can involve a substantial wait. See more on renting a car in Croatia.
Ferry: To visit Croatia's islands, you'll most likely confront Croatia's ferry system (although not necessarily. See seaplanes below). Car ferries from one island to another are few and far between. For island-hopping, plan on ditching the car for a passenger ferry. See more on ferries in Croatia.
Seaplane: This new service is surprisingly reasonable and particularly useful for the Pula-Split service which whisks you from Istria to Dalmatia in less than an hour. The Split to Lastovo and Korčula services are also the best way to reach these islands. The company handling the route is European Coastal Airlines. More routes are planned.
Train: Forget it. Croatia's train network is heavily weighted to commuters and business travellers. Zagreb to Osijek or Varaždin by train makes sense or even the summer overnight train from Zagreb to Split. Otherwise, you're much better off taking a bus. Note that there is no online booking for Croatia Railways. See more about getting around by train.
