A number of records have been broken this tourist season in Croatia. It might be September but beaches along the Adriatic coast are still full in a number of places. One region that has had a champion summer is the region of Istria in Croatia's north-west...
Hotels and campsites are still well populated and will be open until the end of October.
"We expect that in the next 5-6 days that we will welcome the 3 millionth tourist to Istria, which is around 20 days earlier than last year. Till the end of the year we expect 3.5 million tourists to visit which is a record for Istria, and also 23 million overnight stays which will also be a record," said Istria Tourist Board Director Denis Ivošević.
One of the most popular destinations in Istria, Rovinj, has again not disappointed this year.
"We have had 2,750,000 overnight stays so far. In around 15 days we expect to pass 3 million overnight stays, which will be one week earlier than last year," said Rovinj Tourist Board Director Odette Sapač.
Poreč, another popular Istrian spot, has also had a good season, up around 7% after the preseason this summer. With the weather still good, September is expected to bring some good result for the region also.
"We believe that September will be an extremely good month and we expect it to be a few percentage points better than the record September last year," added Ivošević.

It might be September but it is sunny and warm here in Istria and the Lidl car park was packed with tourists today.
There was growth in August in all Adriatic counties, as well as in Zagreb. Istria was the most popular destination with 1 million visitors (+5.1%). There were 768,000 in the Split-Dalmatia county (+6.8), 713,000 in Kvarner (+6.2%), 491,000 in Zadar County (+3.8%), 122,00 in Zagreb (+14.5%) and 354,000 in Dubrovnik-Neretva County (+5%)
A million visitor was not bad for Istria, with a natural population a third of that. For all Dubrovnik's fame, it still only gets a third of the visitors that Istria does. As always, once you get away from the coast, the visitors have magically disappeared ! Inland Istria is completely unspoiled. Most visitors never see it. Some inland villa owners report being solidly booked from May to October though.
