Diners Club have voted Istria the second most beautiful place in Europe.
The first was the South Tyrol, which, like Istria, was occupied by Italy after the First World War after both were previously part of Austro-Hungary. Whilst Istria became part of Jugoslavia after World War Two, the South Tyrol, which is largely German speaking, remained part of Italy.
The northern part of Istria, with its rolling vineyard covered hills and hilltop villages, like Grosnjan and Motovun, is reminiscent of Tuscany and Umbria, but much less expensive.
