We are getting news that banks are likely to stop paying variable amount standing orders from the beginning of next year.
As this is a pretty fundamental banking service, it initially seemed unlikely especially when one wonders how, in an environment where large numbers of utility customers are not permanently resident, the customers will be expected to pay.
We are trying to find out more.

It looks like, with the exception of Hypo-Alpe-Adria, they are all stopping accepting the bills directly from the utility companies. Even HAA cannot guarantee how long they will continue the service.
If you have been using the service previously, you should have had something from your bank advising you of the discontinuation, although as it will almost certainly have been in Croatian, you might not have realised it, particularly if it has been posted to your Croatian property and you haven't visited it recently.
If you have someone looking after your property, you will need to see whether they are willing to physically receive the bills and organise the payments.

The latest, from Erste Bank, is that they are happy to pay a fixed amount every month to a utility, but not deal with the varying amounts that receiving the bills each month from the utility entailed.
This offers some support to home owners, in that if they pay an amount each month after calculating the average amount of bills they have had previously, they are unlikely to be disconnected and can then make up any difference when they are next here.
