In case anyone missed it in the other thread, this was the up to date position as of April 5th 2004:- The first thing will be a positive avis or an opinion of the European commission on the request for the candidacy status to join the EU which is likely to come by the end of June 2004. Then, equally crucial is the date to open the negotiation process which is to be set by the EU - hope is that it will happen by the end of June also. Than the negotiations and ratifications and somewhere in 2008 we will be ready for accession. As regards problems - that is too complex. You could say that problems are the same as they were in all states that had the same ambitions: transition, adjustment to the standards and legal framework, etc. More specifically, reform of judiciary will need the longest period, and agriculture will be the most expensive issue. Everything else is falling into the Copenhagen and specific political criteria that will pose no problems.

i noticed the word *we* there.. judicial reform was the most perplexing issue that stood out to me. Your wife's opinions on the matter were exceptionally insightful ni retrospect. I don't know if she still remembers me. Anyway, I hope both of you are in good health.

Hi Sameen
Of course we both remember you!
Actually the text was quoted verbatim from my government source, who preferred to have me post the answer to the question when I put it up to him.
'We' is OK though! I am Croatian too!
