Don't know if there is already anything posted about this already but just want to let people know about the route that we are using in April when we visit Medulin (near Pula). Flying from Manchester to Cologne then Cologne to Rijeka with Hapag Lloyd Express and then hiring a car. Total jorney time 10 hours ish including 4 hours sat in Cologne airport! Prices aren't too bad £125 return. Could have got it cheaper I think using another airline to Cologne. Easier for us Northerners than driving down to Stanstead! If it works out ok I'll post again, would not like to "lose" the route just because people don't know about it.

Cologne is looking like an interesting hub for people from the north of England and Scotland. Given that you need to change somewhere, Cologne-Bonn is often a better bet than Stanstead. I've used Cologne-Bonn several times. When the German capital returned to Berlin, the airport was faced with a big drop in trade. They have now repositioned themselves as a major low cost airline hub, with Ryanair, Easyjet, German Wings Hapag-Lloyd Express and others using it. It is a first class airport, unlike many of the usual cheapie airports, with an S-Bahn station under it and only Eur2 to get in to Cologne or Bonn.

Airfares to Croatia are a lot better than a year ago. BA have good connections to Dubrovnik and Split from many regional airports via Gatwick with the LGW DBV leg costing as little as 31 GBP plus taxes. Charter flights are being discounted now and there are a few about for around 130 GBP return inc taxes to a good choice of airports. Things are a changing!

All went well on the flights, all were early, Cologne airport was fine for the 3 hours we were hanging about waiting for the flight to Rijeka. Picked up the car with no problem at Rijeka airport and took about 2 hours to drive to Pula. For £120 for 4 flights we can't complain. Would certainly use the route again, took the opportunity to take the scenic coastal road route back to Rijeka via Opatijia which was well worth it despite the rain
