Great site, Myself and my partner love the idea of investing in Croatia. We think we could pay outright for a property, and we are interested in setting up a hostel for travellers as a small business to pass the time as the price of the property hopefully rises. You have caught us at the start of our investigation, and I wonder if you could supply any basic info. upon which we could build. Where do the travellers tend to roam? What kind of restrictions/licences are in place for these ventures? What is the range of prices we should expect to pay for such a property? As a starter for ten, an answer to any of these questions woud help get us started. Thank you kindly

Hi, Just read your text. I wonder if you a planning to start a gay business. My partner and I are thinking of doing the same in Croatia. We are still wondering if it is a good thing to do. We were thinking of the island of Brac or around Split. What are your plans?
Regards, Ivan Roos

I am not gay, and I have no idea what the gay market is like in Croatia. Good luck though, I hope you can find a niche. I want to know what people travel in Croatia. Are there many backpackers? I presume there must be plenty of hostels, but few run by English. Is there a beautiful, less developed area that is popular with budget travellers?

Hi Sorry we haven't responded before. We don't have a lot of contact with backpackers so cannot really advise you. In general, bus routes run down from Trieste, where Ryanair fly in to, down to Pula, in Istria. Otherwise, bus and train routes tend to radiate from Zagreb. There are some bus routes that run North from Dubrovnik up to Korcula. There will be others that radiate from Split, Rijeka and in the Zadar area. In some cases they only run at times to suit workers going to and from work. They won't be the 20 minute services that Londoners are used to. Many of the more interesting places will only be accessible by car. Books like the Rough Guide, obtainable from places like Waterstones will give you more idea. Maps are available on line from www.stanfords.co.ukMotovun seems to get backpackers. We have one property in Motovun that would convert well in to a hostel www.croatiapropertyservices.com/showproperty.asp?cmd=details&pid=82&lang=engHope this gives you a start.
