I have bought a property in Istria and so far have only hired cars at Trieste airport. In March I was thinking of driving over in my right-hand drive car to stay there over the summer. Does anyone have any advice on the best route to take, how to get over the channel cheaply, what to do about car tax and insurance, and being covered for possible breakdown. I would be loaded with used goods to furnish the house: how would the customs officials view this - anyone any experience of having done this?

I drove down last july, did the calais crossing, tried the belgium, luxemburg route down and up through france back, deffinately pay the tolls on the french roads, its a much better route, once you get to karlsrhure its easy just follow the road signs, have since taken a left hooker down to leave there,we found it a good experience to take the night ferry from rijeka to split, you can have a drink a good meal and a nights sleep and arrive in split in the morning fresh, make a list of your items taking in separate them new and second hand, you most probably will only be charged for the new items..hope this helps
