From Croatia Week
Croatia's Minister of Tourism Darko Lorencic has this week presented the governments '1000 swimming pools for Croatian tourism' initiative, which will see thousands of swimming pools be built up and down the country as Croatia aims to extend its tourist season.
The government will give 50,000 kuna (6,600 euro) grants or up to 50% of the total investment, for renters of private tourist accommodation homes and small family hotels to build swimming pools.
The requirement to be eligible for the ‘free’ grant is that the swimming pool must be bigger than 30 square metres, with indoor pools larger than 20 square metres. For all pools built up to 50 square metres in size no building permits will be required as part of the incentive scheme. All pools built from 1 January to 31 October will be eligible for the grants for 2013.
Extending the tourist season is one of our main aims. and since places with pools have on average 30% more occupancy, I am sure than this programme will add strength to Croatian tourism," said Lorencin.
We comment :
We are not sure of these figures.
Eur6,600 is quoted and then 'or up to 50%' is mentioned, which suggests that the 50% is likely to be less than that figure. Given that the cost of a pool, complete with its technical equipment, is likely to be about Eur 25,000 for a typical 8m x 4m one, the 50% would seem to be meaningless, as on these simple figures, it is much more than the Eur6,600.
It would seem that Eur 6,600 would be the total applicable per pool on its own.
Should interest in the scheme provoke a surge in demand, the limited number of pool builders and equipment suppliers would likely increase their prices, following usual supply and demand economic theory, negating any advantage.
Whether Eur 6.6M has been voted into the national budget for the purpose has not been indicated and nor has how quickly grants would be paid.
