Post by balacleigh on Mar 31, 2005, 4:52pm
Does anyone know the progess of the motorway ? Last time I was there, they were working by Zbandaj. What is the progress ? Any info on when it will be finished ?
Thanks in advance.

It seems to be on schedule for June 22nd. The stretch from Medaki, where the Eastern arm joins, up to the big bridge over the Mirna is virtually complete. Asphalt is finished, road markings are done, barriers and emergency telephones are in. Signs are all up. They were seeding the sides this week.
Some locals are already using it unofficially.
The Mirna bridge still needed asphalting when I checked last week. North of the bridge I think is virtually complete, too, although when I looked at the Novigrad exit at Nova Vas yesterday, it still needed some signage.

Latest is that it will open this Saturday, a month ahead of schedule. The stretch down from the border down to Visnjan is a vast improvement on the road down from Buje!

Belay that! It didn't open on Saturday as the papers had said it would. I'm told there is a wrangle about the need for bilingual signage, but it is more likely an excuse because the date didn't fit whoever was supposed to open it's diary.

And.....what happened to the motorway....is it open now or not?

Well, I was told this week it will now be this Saturday. I hope so, as it saves an awful lot of time and stress getting from here to Buje and will also save a lot of time getting in to Porec while the Visnjan Porec road is closed for rebuilding.

Ivo Sanader actually opened it today!
A word of warning! There are no petrol stations anywhere along it. If you are running low, be sure to fill up before you cross the border. Petrol stations are not as frequent in Istria as in the UK. The old road only has them at Buje, Baderna and then down near Pula. The new road has none until you are nearly at Pula. Otherwise, bigger towns have them. Don't expect to find any in villages, even bigger ones like Visnjan. The other arm of the Ypsilon, from Rijeka, has one at Ucka, but again none until almost Pula.

Peter - that is great news. Thanks for the update. Does that mean you can now go the whole way from the border down to Pula and is it all connected up ? Any idea on expected journey times ? Do you know what the expected connection from the north is to Porec ? Is it via Baderna turnoff or further north ?
Many thanks in the update.

The bit from the border to the Savudrija turnoff still seems to be closed but from Buje down to Pula is clear all the way. I can do Visnjan to Savudrija now in under 30mins and only about 20mins to Buje.
At the moment they are completely rebuilding the Visnjan- Kufci road and it is totally blocked. Use the Baderna turnoff for Porec for the next week or two.

I should also have mentioned that the toll booths are also open! It will cost you Kn14 or 2 euro for a car.

Peter,
Thank you for all the updates on this topic. Much appreciated.

I see the services area at Bacva has had its sign replaced with one indicating a fuel availability, although crossed out, as there is none there yet, and apart from an area of cleared land at the back, no sign of one being built yet either.
The rebuilding of the Visnjan-Kufci stretch of the road from Visnjan to Porec is well advanced. The bit through Nova Vas village still needs surfacing, but from Visnjan to there, and from there to Kufci, have both been widened, straightened out and have a brand new asphalt surface, which is a big improvement on the previous road.

The rebuilt road from the Ypsilon junction at Visnjan down towards Porec opened today. They still have a bit to rebuild from Kufci in to Porec, but they will do that later this year. There will then be a good road all the way from the border with Slovenia all the way to Porec.
The Visnjan junction is now the best one to take for Porec.

The part of the Visnjan and Vizinada to Porec road between Porec and Kufci is currently being rebuilt and will be closed for the next couple of weeks while they completely rebuild it.
You can get from the Ypsilon at Visnjan to Kufci but not up to Porec. The locals are using a partly unsurfaced road through the back of Kufci across to the Porec Novigrad road as a diversion.
Otherwise, for anyone coming from Vizinada, take the right hand turn at Labinci Kastelir and cut over to Tar on the Porec Novigrad road. For anyone coming down the Ypsilon from Buje or Slovenija, stay on the Ypsilon and come off at the Baderna junction if you want to get to Porec, Vsar or Funtana.

The Porec-Kufci road is still closed while they are completely rebuilding it, which seems also to be eliminating the dip at the bottom. They are just starting to clear the ground for a new roundabout at Kufci, which should make that junction a lot safer.

The direct route to Novigrad from the Ypsilon is currently closed while it is being rebuilt. Novigrad drivers need to come off at the previous Buje junction and take the Buje - Novigrad road.

The road to Porec from Visnjan is still only passable over very rough ground between Kufci and Porec while they are rebuilding it. Sometimes it is blocked altogether by plant that is working. Anyone coming down the Ypsilon from Trieste wanting Porec is best advised to continue to the next (Baderna) junction and go in on the Pazin road.
The Novigrad road from the Ypsilon is also still blocked while they rebuild it. Anyone wanting Lanterna or Tar can reach it by coming off the Ypsilon at Visnjan, then going towards Porec until Nova Vas. Turn right at Nova Vas and cut across through Gedici to Tar.
Our new office at Visnjan, which is right beside the Ypsilon junction, has a large sign on saying 'Tourist Information' and as the tourist office at the other end of the building has still not opened, we get hoards of visitors coming in asking for directions.

The road from Visnjan to Porec opened last night. You can now get to Porec easily if you come off the Ypsilon at the Visnjan turnoff. Our new offices are right beside the junction in the stone building with blue shutters.
The weather is gorgeous at the moment, hot and sunny.

We are anticipating the start of the Ypsilon being made into a dual carriageway and thus a proper motorway. Rumour has it that this will start in February. Whether it will include the Myrna Bridge I don't know, as that would be particularly expensive. The existing overbridges were constructed with road widening in mind, so they should not be a problem.
Happy New Year to one and all!

Happy New Year to you Peter and the team,
Interesting. Presumably if they are starting in February this will mean disruption on the 'motorway' during the busy summer months?
Would appreciate if you could keep all informed of progress and any road closures etc.
Many thanks.

Hi Julijana
Happy New Year to you, too.
It wouldn't surprise me. They always seem to start these things too late, so that they are inevitably still finishing them when the season starts. Last year it was the big roundabout to the north of Porec and the internal roadworks in Porec itself that they didn't start in the autumn and left until the spring, resulting in traffic problems continuing until August.
I know they need warm weather for asphalting, so that it bonds properly, but the preliminary work could have been started much earlier. I assume the financing approvals are out of synchronisation with the civil engineering necessities!
Cheers
