Croatia Top for Value for Money & as a 2010 Destination
02 December 2009

Looking for more value for money for your 2010 holiday...?
Outside of the Eurozone, Croatia is a fantastic choice - beautiful, exclusive but just not that expensive yet...

Realbuzz.com has just put Croatia on the list of the top ten countries to visit on a budget. The list “10 cheap countries to visit now” is a guide for recession savvy tourists looking for new, cheaper destinations. Old favourites like France, Italy, Spain and USA are proving less popular and are being replaced by countries such as Mexico, Turkey, South Africa, Iceland and Croatia, the article says. The article is a response to the UK tourist situation which has seen the pound plummet in value against the Dollar and Euro making holidays to the Eurozone and the USA much more expensive.

Guide2Croatia has looked into the cost of loving and prices in Croatia generally that you might find...

The cost of living in Croatia is overall lower than much of Western Europe. Prices vary widely by region but still, Croatia is generally around 25% cheaper than the UK. Of course, if you really go for it on holiday you can spend as much as you want and there are expensive and exclusive restaurants and watering holes if you want to do that. But generally speaking, Croatia is reasonably priced. This is great news for UK holiday makers for the up and coming summer season as the Euro is still going to be expensive just like last year! It makes a real difference to the price of anyone's holiday if you have to pay out so much for food and drinks - especially if you have a family.

Realbuzz.com said "Croatia still remains outside the eurozone, so is good value for money compared with the likes of France or Italy. The weakness of the Croatian kuna against the pound, makes it one of the cheapest destinations in Europe. If you are on a budget, there's no lack of cheap accommodation in Croatia, from campsites to private guest houses, while even the more up-market hotels still offer good deals. The easiest way to do this is to travel outside of the peak season (June to August) - instead travelling in April/ May or September/October, when you should still experience good weather but find room prices far cheaper."

Here's a list of some of the most popular holiday purchases and their prices in Croatia:
Espresso coffee: 6 kunas (about 80p)
Cappuccino: 7 to 8 kunas
Beer - 33cl: 9 to 10 kunas (about £1.30)
Beer - 50 cl: 10 to 12 kunas (about £1.50)
Local wine in a restaurant: 60 to 70 kunas per liter (about £7-£8)
Filetsteak: 70 to 80 kunas (about £8-£9)
Fish: 250 to 300 kunas per kilo (about £29-£33 per kilo)
1 litre of petrol: 6,50 kunas (about 90p)

A recent survey says in the UK and Croatia shows that Croatia is around 25% less expensive than the UK - a big difference to the doubly expensive Eurozone countries of France, Greece and Spain.

But Croatia isn't a 'cheap' destination and British Airways has voted Dubrovnik no. 6 in their Top 10 Top Destinations list. What makes it attractive (low development and none of the commercialization that we've seen in the med over the last 25 years) also means there isn't a huge amount of accommodation relative to other countries. So accommodation prices aren't cheap, but nor would one want them to be - Croatia is popular these days as a holiday destination and place to live because it is unspoilt. This is the key to Croatia's success. CNN has also just listed Croatia as the new Celebrity destination of 2010 with the likes of Steven Spielberg, Andre Agassi, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, and Sharon Stone all visiting. CNN says that Dubai was the country of choice for celebs but they are now switching to less expensive options in the light of the US financial situation.

The cost of living day to day in Croatia is an added bonus which has been made more obvious by the Euro situation. For travelers who appreciate this about Croatia, it's an excellent option and when you have been there it's easy to see why people love it so much.

An interesting article in ''The Observer'' earlier this year, reintroduced British holiday-makers to the delights of Croatia - Yugoslavia used to be more popular than Greece a generation ago so it seems rather funny! The article from 18.01.2009. from the travel section has a number of specific suggestions for holidays in Croatia rather than-other places:

-The Island of Korčula instead of Corfu!

-Istria instead of Chianti! (Great selection of wine, truffles and the medieval hill towns of Motovun and Groznjan,Pula's amphitheatre make Istria special)

-Zadar instead of Ibiza ("one of the hippest club scenes in Europe" is in Zadar, according to The Guardian. (The Garden festival is recommended! The full article can be found here...

So the advice is clear! Spend less of your hard earned money and get more in Croatia!

I'm sorry to report that Pevec appears to have gone into liquidation.

I know many people have found it most useful, with a wide range of products on one site.

The last time I was in, there were a lot of empty shelves, which made me wonder how they were doing and someone reported two weeks ago that the Pula branch had closed the upper floor, with everything consolidated onto the ground floor. Today, I was told that it has closed down completely.

I imagine that their volume business was supplying the building industry and that this was hit hard this year. They were a major employer, with branches right across Croatia.

Very sad.

 High quality houses in Istria
« Result #4 on Oct 26, 2009, 6:52am »

On Saturday, I went to see the interiors of some houses that have recently been completed at Baredine.

We'd had some input into them originally. The concept had originally been: what can most people afford to pay and what do they expect for it?

These houses were designed on the basis of offering:

3 Bedrooms
Good views
a Pool
Some stone facades
All under Eur250,000

The concept was achieved by building two three house terraces, with each house different from its neighbour in the terrace, to lend some character. The pool, which is a huge one, is shared by the six houses. People have said, 'but I thought I'd have my own pool', but when they learn how much pool maintenance costs, which is essential if renting out, splitting it 6 ways makes it much more attractive. Three of them have already been sold, so we only have three to offer.

When I saw the interiors on Saturday, finished and furnished of the ones that have already sold, I genuinely said 'Wow!'. These are special. From the outside, the houses do not look huge, but you'd never believe it from inside. The interiors are spacious and very stylish. Since we still have access to them, you can see for yourself. I took lots of photos and will be pleased to forward them to anyone interested. I'm sure you will be as impressed as I was at just what fantastic value these houses are.

Two of them are Eur199,000 and the biggest one, with three storeys, is Eur240,000.
The prices include, gas fired underfloor heating throughout, air conditioning, fitted wooden wardrobes and shared pool. The views are free!

The Baderna junction on the Ypsilon has closed again and as the access road is currently ripped up, is likely to be closed for some time until it is reinstated.

The junctions on the Ypsilon at Visnjan and Baderna have reopened although there are closures for two hours in the middle of the day.

The road between Kastelir and Vizinada is currently closed north of Kastelir while the bridge carrying the Ypsilon over it is being widened and concrete casting is taking place. Diversions are in place via Visnjan and Baskoti for the next two weeks.

Currently, although the Ypsilon is open, the junctions north(Visnjan) and east (Baderna) of Porec are closed. Drivers coming from the north and needing Porec should leave at the Novigrad exit, just before the Myrna bridge and go via Novigrad. Drivers from the south will need to leave at the first junction after the Limski bridge and use the old Pula Trieste road up to Sv.Lovrec, then turn to Porec near the cemetary at Sv.Lovrec.

The Kempinski Hotel Adriatic was officially opened by President Stjepan Mesic on Friday evening in Savudrija, Istria.

At the opening ceremony, Mesic stressed Croatia needed investment because the country’s economy could not grow without it.

Mesic added that the Kempinski hotel opening sent a significance message to others.

He said: "Although the world, including Croatia, faces a crisis, this is a message that investment in Croatia is worthwhile. If Kempinski succeeds, others can as well. "

Kempinski Hotel Adriatic representative Ljubica Marfan said the resort’s opening was an accomplishment he had long been waiting for.

The Croatian five-star luxury seaside Golf & Spa Resort is the first hotel of an international luxury hotel group on the northwestern coast of Istria.

The hotel, which cost 1.6 billion kunas or 217 million Euros, has luxury villas, the first championship 18-hole golf course in Croatia, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, 186 rooms equipped with modern technology, 19 suites, two presidential suites and three restaurants.

Now we are well into the season, the general picture in Istria seems to be that while hotel bookings are down and some operators have been mothballing the odd hotel and consolidating guests into their other hotels, villa and apartment rentals have done quite well.
Restaurants aren't doing quite as well as last year as villa and apartment guests appear to be saving money by eating more where they are staying and only eating in restaurants on some nights, whereas previously they would have eaten out more.

The picture further down the coast, in Dalmatia and the islands, seems to be generally similar in principle, but tougher, as booking even of villas and apartments has not been as good as up here. Whilst the vast majority of Istria's tourists seem to drive here, Dalmatia gets a higher proportion of its visitors tending to fly in, being several hours drive further south, and so less interesting to drive to.

Istria's position seems to be standing it in good stead.

Whenever seeing news items on Croatian tourism, it is always worth remembering that particular areas can vary considerably from national figures and nowhere more so than Istria.

We currently have a new problem. Our email address info@croatiapropertyservices.com is routed via Zetnet in the UK as it was our most secure and had been for many years.

Unfortunately, they have been taken over by Breathe, who have botched the job of moving the servers. Thousands of Zetnet customers have been unable to access their mail for nearly two weeks which is now the subject of an OFCOM investigation.

We have discovered that mail to info@croatiapropertyservices.com is bouncing as unrouteable. Please use peter.ellis@croatiapropertyservices.com as this is routed via the Avalon servers and should get through OK.

We apologise for any inconvenience.
